This converter estimates the US GPA equivalent of a grade from Germany, France, Spain or India. There is no official universal conversion, so instead of a formula it shows you what US universities actually publish, side by side.
How it’s calculated
Each table below was published by a US university for its own admissions or study abroad use. We take three steps:
- Look up your grade in each table to get a US letter grade.
- Turn each letter into points on the 4.0 scale, for example A = 4.0 and B+ = 3.3.
- Report the lowest and highest result as your range.
Published bands sometimes leave small gaps, such as 1.5 then 1.6. A grade inside a gap falls to the lower band. A dash in the tables means that the table doesn’t cover that grade, and it isn’t counted.
Worked example
A German grade of 1.7, using the three tables for Germany:
- NC State’s table puts 1.6–2.5 at A, which is 4.0.
- San Francisco State’s table also puts 1.6–2.5 at A, which is 4.0.
- The University of North Florida’s table puts 1.6–2.5 at A-, which is 3.7.
Estimated US GPA = 3.7 to 4.0.
Germany
Germany’s scale runs the opposite way to the US one: 1.0 is the best grade, and higher numbers are worse. Most tables treat anything above 4.0 as a fail.
| German grade | NC State | SF State | UNF |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1.0–1.5 | A | A+ | A |
| 1.6–2.5 | A | A | A- |
| 2.6–3.5 | B | B | B |
| 3.6–4.0 | C | C | C |
| 4.1–5.0 | F | — | F |
| 5.1–6.0 | F | — | — |
France
French grades run from 0 to 20, usually with 10 as the pass mark. High marks are rare, so the tables give an A from 14 or 15 upward, well below what those numbers would suggest as a percentage.
| French grade | NC State | SF State | UNF |
|---|---|---|---|
| 16.0–20.0 | A | A+ | A |
| 15.0–15.9 | A | A | A |
| 14.0–14.9 | A | A | A- |
| 12.0–13.9 | B+ | B | B+ |
| 11.0–11.9 | B | C | B |
| 10.5–10.9 | B- | C | C+ |
| 10.1–10.4 | C+ | C | C |
| 10.0 | C | C | C |
| 9.0–9.9 | C- | — | D |
| 8.0–8.9 | D | — | D |
| 0.0–7.9 | F | — | F |
Spain
Spanish grades run from 0 to 10, with 5 as the pass mark. The words on a transcript are aprobado from 5, notable from 7, and sobresaliente from 9. The tables disagree most in the middle of the scale, so a 7.5 can read anywhere from a B to an A-.
| Spanish grade | NC State | UNF (Rey Juan Carlos) | UNF (Alicante, Valencia) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9.0–10.0 | A | A | A |
| 8.0–8.9 | A- | B | A |
| 7.8–7.9 | B+ | B | A |
| 7.5–7.7 | B+ | B | A- |
| 7.0–7.4 | B+ | B | B+ |
| 6.5–6.9 | B | C | B |
| 6.0–6.4 | B | C | B- |
| 5.5–5.9 | B- | C | C+ |
| 5.0–5.4 | C | C | C |
| 0.0–4.9 | F | F | F |
India
Many Indian universities report percentages and a class, and First Class generally starts at 60%. The main disagreement is whether 60–69% is an A or a B, so this range is wide. Pass marks also vary between institutions, typically from 30 to 40%, which is why low grades can read as a pass or a fail.
| Percentage | SF State | Andrews | Montana State |
|---|---|---|---|
| 70–100 | A | A | A |
| 60–69 | A | A | B |
| 55–59 | B+ | B | B |
| 50–54 | B | B | B |
| 43–49 | C+ | C | C |
| 40–42 | C | C | C |
| 35–39 | C | F | C |
| 0–34 | F | F | F |
University of North Florida tables apply to its own exchange students, at the partner universities it names. We include them as published examples, not as a rule for other schools.
